reImagine 2015 – preparing to go to Fargo

As many others in the Dynamics GP community, I’m getting ready to head to Fargo for the annual partner conference dedicated purely to GP.

This year, I vow to not pay ridiculous US roaming fees on my cell phone. Every year I feel a little bit stranded, a little bit out of touch and always checking for the free wifi. What a pain in the butt.

Part 1 of getting ready to go this year is arranging for roaming. For those Canadian fans reading this, here is what I did this year. I’ll post at the end how it worked out.

Pet Peeves

There are tons of situations where I find I have to follow up with people in my job.  That’s the nature of my Type A personality I suppose, as well as the nature of managing different clients and projects. The truth is: I hate following up, I hate having to follow up, because I have a vision of a perfect world where people are considerate of your requests and time and they are proactively keeping you in the loop. Sorry, I think I just had a daydream there… ya, right…

Here are a handful of things that drive me crazy. I’m not perfect, and I’m quite sure I’m guilty of some of them, but I work very hard at communicating regularly with my clients, and I feel like I’m the exception to the rule.

I’m the first Professional Member of Dynamics Pros!

How cool is that?

So, last week I received an email, as did many others, welcoming them to the new Association of Dynamics Professionals. If you had registered your interest when they were first putting their website up, I assume you were one of the ones who received this email.

The email suggested to update your profile and log in to the new website etc., so I went ahead and gave it a try, always the keener! I knew I wanted to register for the exams coming up at reImagine 2015 in September, so I figured I would check out the new website, and then sign up.

While I was there, I noticed that there were two types of memberships – an associate (free) and a professional (for a small cost).  The professional membership seemed like a no-brainer, and “investing” in the new association was important to me.

Well, imagine my surprise when Bob McAdam tweeted shortly after that I was the first Professional Member ever!  Cool!

Today I also was mentioned in the Dynamics Pros first tweet ever, double cool… did I mention small things amuse me?

In all seriousness, that was a pleasant surprise, but at the end of the day, I’m proud to be a professional member of the new association, first or otherwise. I’m looking forward to taking both of the exams in September at reImagine, and hopefully be among the first to pass the very first exams!

Learning new things the hard way

I’m continuing to learn more about websites, WordPress ins & outs, and css… the hard way!

Last year I switched my website from Expression Engine to WordPress… for the most part to be on a platform that is more mainstream, ideally easier to get support on, and hopefully a platform that I could do more things myself with.

All was good! I liked the re-design, and all seemed great… until I tried to post articles with media attached (screenshots etc.). Permissions errors out the wazoo… it was very frustrating but a busy time for me with other things, and I ignored it for months. (more…)

Spammers, go away!

Yes, that means you, if you send me emails (or phone me) on any of the following topics (plus many others I’ve forgotten about already):

  • you think my website needs redesigned (it might, but I happen to like it!).
  • you promise to improve my search engine rankings and all those SEO things (swell!).
  • you guarantee me a lot of Facebook likes and Twitter followers (who cares?).
  • you are offering me mobile application development services
  • you work for any competing product to Microsoft Dynamics GP and added me to your “partner” list because you think I’d love to hear about your marketing pitches too

It’s been a while since I’ve ranted. 🙂 (more…)

Where’s Jen?

For several months now, I had been intending to write a short blog post, to let everyone know I’m on a hiatus, and that I won’t be blogging much for the next little while. That is sad in itself because I’m been blogging so infrequently over the last year, that hey, what’s the definition of “not blogging much” in comparison to that?!

So today I’m up early, procrastinating on prepping for a demo, what better time to write a blog post? Sure it’s 5am and I could be doing other things, like say, sleeping, but what the heck… (more…)

Full vs Light User licenses

This is short and sweet – as I don’t usually post “sales” types of things and don’t intend to start now!

It’s somewhat of a tale of two client scenarios, and advice to those who hear certain things from their clients, and are in a position to recommend license options.

I’ve got two clients right now both of whom have expressed a need for additional user licenses in the near future.  Both of them have decent user bases right now (12 and 16 user licenses respectively). Both of them are running into issues with the maximum number of concurrent users being logged in, at various times of the day or week or month. (more…)
